Train crash in South Africa leaves 12 dead and 268 others injured
At least 18 people have been reported dead and another 268 people injured – four of them critically after a train slammed into a lorry in South Africa.
The passenger train, which had been taking people home after the holidays, burst into flames after the horrific collision.
South African authorities blamed the lorry driver, claiming that they had tried to cross the tracks just ahead of the oncoming train.
The crash derailed half a dozen carriages and damaged power lines in the area.
Mthuthuzeli Swartz, acting chief executive of South Africa’s state-owned passenger rail agency, said that the train driver and his assistant suffered minor injuries.
The lorry driver emerged unscathed from the accident as he was halfway across the track when it was hit by the train and dragged for 400 metres.
