Selena Gomez gets emotional as she dedicates award to friend who donated her kidney: ‘She saved my life’
Earlier this year Francia Raisia donated a kidney to best friend Selena after the singer fell gravely ill and required a transplant due to complications with the illness lupus. The pair shared an image from their hospital beds to reveal the surgery to the 25-year-old’s fans.
Selena had taken Francia along to the Billboard Women In Music awards, which took place last night, where she was presented the award of Woman Of The Year. As she accepted the gong she paid tribute to her friend’s selfless act, saying she felt ‘lucky’ after Francia ‘saved her life’.
She said ‘I think Francia should be getting this award. She saved my life… I feel incredibly lucky,’ Selena said as she broke down in tears. ‘Honestly, I couldn’t be more grateful for the position that I’ve been given in my career from 7 to 14 to now.’
‘Honestly, I don’t know if I feel like I deserve it sometimes but I am so honored to be part of an industry where there is real movement for women. I think it’s important, I couldn’t be more thrilled.’
She added: ‘I feel like for me, with my music, I’ve been able to illustrate the things that I want. ‘And I’m reminded by a team of people who believe in me even when I don’t myself, and I couldn’t be more luckier.’
