Mel Gibson back on the Hollywood scenes, admits surprise at being accepted back after former disgrace
Mel Gibson has finally made his way back into Hollywood, he admitted just how challenging it was to be accepted back into Hollywood after a string of personal troubles which could have ended his career.
The Oscar-winning actor and director fell from favour after a string of incidents which saw him accused of racist and anti-Semitic outbursts, as well as an alleged domestic violence incident with his then partner Oksana Grigorieva. But Mel has managed to get his career back on track in spite of it all – being nominated for an Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge earlier this year – and speaking to Graham Norton he revealed how it felt to be back. ‘I am surprised as I have been digging a ditch for the past 10 years,’ explained the star, who is back on screens in Daddy’s Home 2.
‘Quite frankly, it’s been a lot of hard work personally and professionally, but the work goes on as I think it does for most of us.” However the actor admitted that he never considered giving up public life in spite of it all. ‘You’ve chosen a carer and there is a calling, particularly in directing and you just have to get back up there and express yourself through storytelling,’ he pointed out. ‘That never went away. During those years I was just writing and conceiving stories.’
Mel ran into trouble in 2006 during a DUI stop, he infamously went on a shocking anti-Semitic rant about how ‘Jews started all the wars’ – referring to it 10 years later as an ‘unfortunate incident’. ‘I was loaded and angry and arrested,’ he explained. ‘I was recorded illegally by an unscrupulous police officer who was never prosecuted for that crime. And then it was made public by him for profit, and by members of — we’ll call it the press. ‘So, not fair. I guess as who I am, I’m not allowed to have a nervous breakdown, ever.’ However he also ran into trouble over language he used in 2010 when he was recorded on the phone to Grigrorieva in regards to what she was wearing that night. ‘You’re an embarrassment to me, you look like a fing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of ners, it will be your fault,’ he was heard to tell her.
In 2011, Grigrorieva accused him of knocking two of her teeth out and physically attacking her while pregnant. The actor was found guilty of battery but had his conviction wiped after completing a three-year probation.
