12 dead in Bronx, New York, apartment fire

Twelve people were reported dead and four others fighting for their lives late Thursday after a fire broke out on the 1st floor of a 5 floor Bronx apartment building and quickly swept through other floors.

In a briefing outside the building, New York City ,Mayor Bill de Blasio, said one of the victims is a child around a year old and mentions that other lives may be lost as well.

“We may lose others as well,” he said.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro called the fire, “historic in its magnitude,” because of the number of lives lost. Excluding the Sept. 11 attacks, it was the worst fire in the city since 87 people were killed at a social club fire in the Bronx in 1990.

The apartment is said to have tenants who hail from all over the world.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Nigro said.
